The progress stages of my pastel portrait of Carolanne, will post the finished image when I get my sketchbook back but for now I have a few construction images. The skin took me about a day to do. I always start by doing one base tone over the WHOLE face (except the eyes) just to give it an undertone. I use a few skin colours to build up the creases and structure of the face before adding shadows and highlights. I leave the more drastic shading until all the light shades in the piece are done.
